Forest Type:

The forest type of BHS is (5B/C1) Northern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest and has altitudinal range of 70-78 m (asl), with metamorphic and igneous rocks like schists, gneiss, granite and reddish-brown silt-clay loamy soil.

Important Species:

This BHS is home to 388 species of plants, including trees, lianas of the ancient families like Magnoliaceae, Annonaceae etc. and some rare cryptogams like Ophioglossum reticulatum and Helminthostachys zeylanica. The BHS also hosts medicinal plants with diminishing population like Strychnos nux-vomica, Crateva nurvala, Holarrhena pubescens, Rauvolfia serpentinaetc. Besides, the BHS shelters diversity of insects, spiders, squirrels, birds, langurs, reptiles, amphibians etc.

Important Species:

It offers refuge to Himalayan Salamander (Tylototriton himalayanus) which is an evolutionary significant species originated during early-to-middle Miocene era; endemic to Indo-Nepal Himalayan region; listed under Appendix II of CITES and Vulnerable as per IUCN with decreasing population trend.

Lateritic dry deciduous forest ecosystem. It has unique geological and paleo-botanical features.

Important Species:

It is the first Wood Fossil Park of West Bengal. It has diversified well preserved angiosperm wood fossils dating back to Jurassic age. Besides, the site harbours a number of age-old trees, which harbour different kinds of fauna, including many Scheduled species.

Important Species:

It is the habitat of nearly 100 species of birds both migratory and resident, along with Golden Monitor, Smooth Coated Otter, Golden Jackel, etc.

Important Species:

Is hosts heritage of indigenous horticultural germplasm of orchard trees. It includes more than fifty varieties of Mango, seven varieties of Guava, five varieties each of Lime, Litchi, Water apple and Kul. Besides horticultural crops, the campus nurtures several indigenous and medicinal plants, further it provides good habitat for various avian fauna, butterflies and other insects.

Important Species:

Habitat of Red Crabs (Ocypod macrocera), Dotilla Crab, Fiddler Crab, Monitor Lizard, Mongoose, Golden Jackle, Jungle Cat, etc.

Ecosystem Type:

This is an island in the river Haldi under Itamogra II Gram Panchayat of Mahishadal Development Block, Purba Medinipur district having mangrove swamp with regular tidal influence and sustaining some littoral fauna, as well as inland waterbody supporting indigenous fishes.

Important Species:

The inside of the island is populated by different mangroves species like Piyara Bain, Jat Bain, Chak Keora, Kakra, etc. and several mangrove associated plants like Kali lata, Habul/Paras Pipul, Hargoja, Bon Jui, etc. Haldir Char is also home to remarkable avian population with nests like Open Bill Stork, Little Cormorant, Indian Cormorant, Egret, Night Heron, Pond Heron, etc.

As per the Section -7 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, accessing bio-resources and associated traditional knowledge of the state of West Bengal requires prior intimation to the West Bengal Biodiversity Board. The intimation to the Board should be given in specified format (Form-I & Form-A) along with requisite Application Fee.
